Pūhoro STEMM Academy
Pūhoro 3-Year Partnership Overview

Pūhoro STEMM Academy is a kaupapa Māori organisation dedicated to increasing Māori participation and success in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Mātauranga Māori) pathways.
Established in 2016, Pūhoro was created in response to the low engagement of Māori in STEM-related careers and the under-representation of Māori in science and technology industries across Aotearoa.
Through culturally grounded programmes and strong community engagement, Pūhoro empowers rangatahi Māori to pursue STEMM education and careers, fostering a future workforce that reflects the diversity of our nation.
Strengthening pathways for Māori talent
Te Mātāpuna Fonterra is proud to partner with Pūhoro in a three-year collaboration aimed at strengthening pathways for Māori talent into STEMM careers.
This partnership builds on a successful initial year and includes initiatives such as scholarships, wānanga support, and opportunities for rangatahi to engage with Fonterra’s Early Career Programme – including internships, apprenticeships, and graduate roles.
Together, Pūhoro and Fonterra are working to inspire future generations by engaging students, whānau, and communities early, and by showcasing the exciting possibilities within the Co-op and beyond the farm gate.
Key focus areas of the partnership include:

- Strengthening the pipeline of Māori talent into Te Mātāpuna Fonterra’s Early Career Programme
- Supporting wānanga and scholarship opportunities
- Expanding reach in key regions to connect with more students and communities
- Engaging rangatahi in Years 9–11 to spark interest in STEMM
- Connecting with whānau and hapū to build awareness of career opportunities
